The first edition, first impressions of An Eye for a Tooth and The Berry Scene, in the publisher's original cloth bindings, and the fifteenth impression of The Courts of Idleness, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original price-clipped dust wrapper. An Eye for a Tooth and The Berry Scene both conform to the authorized war economy standard, as stated to the copyright page of each volume. Cecil William Mercer (1885-1960), known by his pseudonym Dornford Yates, was a best-selling English novelist during the Interwar Period. An Eye for a Tooth (1943) is the sixth adventure novel in the Chandos series. The events of the story immediately follow those of Blind Corner, the first book of the series. The Courts of Idleness (1944) is the second collection of comic short stories in the Berry series. The book consists of two main collections: 'Book I: How Some Passed out of the Courts for Ever', consisting mainly of light-hearted pre-war stories, and 'Book II: How Others Left the Courts Only to Return', relating post-war tales. Dividing these two groupings is the single story 'Interlude&apos. The Berry Scene (1947) is the eighth collection of comic short stories in the Berry series. The volume comprises ten short stories, filling in gaps from earlier books, with a brief prologue recounting an episode of Berry's schooldays. There are brief appearances from other characters from Yates's novels, including the Lyvedens, the Beaulieus and Jenny Chandos. In the publisher's original cloth bindings; one with a price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is generally smart, with shelf wear to the joints and extremities, and the odd mark to the boards of Eye for a Tooth and Berry Scene. Spine to Eye for a Tooth is somewhat faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the fore edge of all volumes, and to the first and last couple of pages of Berry Scene. Dust wrapper to Courts of Idleness remains generally bright, though chipped, with losses to the head and tail of the spine and to the upper extremity of the rear of the wrap.
